Revisiting season 1 of the Urban Gym podcast; new season on the way

It's time to get back in the gym, if only to record a fresh batch of podcast episodes.

A podcast, set in a gym, designed for its members, crammed with useful chats, tips and advice that anyone can take on board, and it’s only a half-hour listen?

That’ll be the Urban Gym Podcast, or UR Podcast, recorded on site at Urban Gym in New Ross.

This one started on the cusp of the COVID pandemic as a monthly series with invited guests from the world of business, sport, wellbeing and beyond joining owner Andy Murphy and myself on the couch to talk about the ins and outs of their world.

Once we all had to move home, Zoom took over, giving us the chance to catch up with the likes of UFC Hall of Famer (Modern Era Wing), former WEC Featherweight and Team Alpha Male founder Uriah Faber, musician Maverick Sabre, former Republic of Ireland international Daryl Murphy, sleep expert Tom Coleman and more. Heady times.

The last episode in that run, after 17 podcasts, was April 2021. Flash forward to March 2025, and we returned to the couch, almost four years on from the end of the debut season. With a new focus, an awful lot of miles on the road for both of us in the intervening years, and a new setup, it felt good to get things back and going.

A few weeks of planning created eight episodes, recorded in two blocks, and released between March and June 2025. Now, another six months on, we’re heading back to the couch for a third season and a fresh batch of episodes covering the ins and outs of small group personal training, topical training issues and beyond, all in a digestible 30-minute format.

Recording starts later this month with the first episode in the third season due to drop in February as Urban Gym celebrates seven years in business. Ahead of it all, if you’ve never heard of the podcast before, now’s a good time to get acquainted.
